The Greenhouse is Green Again

It's that time of year when the frost warnings to into effect. Actually it's past that time of year, but let's avoid all the existential dread of global warming right now and focus on happy things. Happy things like the greenhouse full of plants!

There's a tray of tropical stuff that's going to go into the house because it can't handle the chilly overnight temps in the greenhouse through the winter. That will leave more room for geraniums and snapdragons that are currently "floating" in here. Lessons learned from last year: tropical plants have to go inside the house, hot pepper plants don't overwinter, and all plants in small pots do best when they are off the floor since the ground gets the coldest.

The eucalyptus tree is on a plant stand with wheels so I can move it around as needed.

There's still plenty of shelf space and room for all my planned projects this winter - starting ranunculus bulbs in February, seed starting in March, pre-potting dahlias at the beginning of April. It will be tight, but there's enough room to make it work. I also plan to store my begonia bulbs in here in dry soil on a bottom shelf out of the way. Last year I had one in here and ignored it all winter (I attempted to overwinter it in here as an experiment and it was immediately nipped by the cold, so I just tucked it into a dark spot and let it go) and this one greenhouse bulb did so much better than the ones I dug up and stored in the basement. So this winter I'm going to try it with all my bulbs in one big pot of soil after they are nipped by frost and we'll see how they do next spring.

As the weather really cools down we'll bring in the big space heater again, put the bubble wrap back up on the ceiling and add buckets of water as heat sinks. Luckily it's not winter yet and the temperatures during the day are quite mild. If anything, it gets too hot in the greenhouse and I have to open it up to release some of the heat.
