I can't believe it's May. Between work and the kids' sports schedule, I'm honestly not sure how we are getting through our spring to-do list, but we are - slow and steady. I'm never as far along as I want to be, but at the same time, it's kind of amazing we get anything done at all. I guess the "secret" is to try to do something every day, even if it's a small something because even the little things add up over time. Sometimes we bite off more than we can chew and end up seeding the backyard grass in the dark or finishing a fence post by flashlight... but we are determined.
Front yard:
Finished:
- Post caps are glued onto the new porch railing
- I planted the rail boxes with flowers, but then remembered they don't fit the new porch rail! I ordered new ones on amazon that were supposed to fit, but they didn't either. The railing is just too weird a shape for anything to grab or balance on. SAD. (But the ones we have aren't going to waste!)
- All of the front yard shrubs are trimmed
- I planted new flowers that came in the mail, but the seedlings from seed are still growing (they are tiny still... another week?)
- Mike reseeded the grass in the front that died mysteriously
- He's also fertilized, added peat moss and all sorts of stuff. And literally waters everything every day that it doesn't rain. (Luckily it's been raining a lot.)
- Plant flowerpots with summer flowers (the porch is still quite pretty)
Still need to:
- Plant seedlings I'm growing from seed (hopefully in a week)
- Mulch the beds (awaiting delivery)
Backyard:
Finished:
- Filled in most of the Morgan-dug holes in the yard and beds
- Reseeded the bare patches of those filled-in holes
- Fertilized the lawn
- Immediately changed our minds about the chicken wire over the dirt patches to keep Morgan from digging when we realized the danger to the kids snagging on it
- Cleaned up the patio and flower beds from fall/winter leaves
- Barricaded the back half of the wood fence with leftover raised bed wood to prevent Morgan digging under that fence (and letting us move the ugly barricades we had there)
- Planted all the perennial flowers and vines that have arrived in the mail
- Plant flower pots with summer annuals (cheers to big box store cheap multi-packs!)
- Plant dahlia bulbs and seedlings (figaro and bishop's children I started from seed)
- Doing what I can to protect the dahlia bulbs... Morgan Mayhem seems intent to dig up and play with them (tomato cages go a long way for protecting delicate plants and bulbs!)
- Trimmed the backyard shrubs and bushes, especially the forsythia (I cut that WAY back)
- Ordered mulch for delivery
Still need to:
- Plant seedlings (only half, including the dahlias, are ready - the rest are still too small and will wait another week)
- Mulch all the backyard plants (awaiting delivery... and this is always a huge undertaking)
Raised Bed Project:
- Garden is demoed. The fence is gone. Beds broken down, dirt removed.
- Fence posts are going in... we've run into some hurdles but we're still moving along. The parts that are in look GOOD.
Still need to:
- Do everything else... including finishing the fence, installing gates, building the beds, redoing the paths, filling the beds with a dirt delivery...
- Paint the garage
