Fixing the Bathroom Door

This is terrible, but the the door to the upstairs bathroom wouldn't close.  Gross I know.  Makes you want to come visit doesn't it?!  The door didn't latch at all.  It closed like 98% of the way, but it was ajar.  We weren't in a big rush to fix it because when we had company over, everyone was downstairs anyways so one had enough privacy.  Except last weekend we had our first overnight guests and we realized it was most definitely time to fix this little problem of ours.

The door sags.  It's almost 90 years old.  After careful examination we realized that the door didn't latch because the the door jam in the frame was too high for the door latch to catch.  So we consulted the internet which had several suggestions ranging from rehanging the door (no way!) to simple things including removing and re-tightening the existing hing screws (didn't work), and replacing the hing screws with longer ones (didn't work).  After we created a big mess (lots of paint had to be chiseled off the door to reach the screws and hinges) we opted for the obvious - lowering the door jamb 1/8th of an inch.  This took only a couple minutes and worked perfectly.  If only we had tried that from the beginning!  Now the door works perfectly and our house guests were none the wiser... until this post.
