Annual Garden Planning: The Flower Beds in the Yard

I shared my plans for the raised bed garden last week with a couple new plants and a few tweaks. There are not a lot of big changes happening in the raised bed garden this year - most of my new plans revolve around the flower garden beds throughout the yard. I'm so excited for spring.

Elsewhere in the yard my plant wish list includes:

  • A new coral charm peony (the one I ordered last year died)
  • Bascobel Shrub rose from David Austin Roses (my new rose for this year)
  • Coral poppies (something new to try)
  • Plum sunflowers (seriously how did I not know about purple sunflowers until this year?!)
  • An orange collarette dahlia (to compliment my red collarette dahlias)
  • A pink collarette dahlia (to compliment my purple collarette dahlias)
  • Elderberry bushes (I'm excited about the flowers and berries these produce, and apparently they like shade and extra moisture, perfect for the way back!)
  • Ranunculus and Anemones
Here are the new flowers - including the new American Dawn dahlia that's actually going in the raised bed garden (first image):

And then there's what I want to grow this year for the first time, thanks to having a greenhouse. This including ranunculus and anemones (the bottom two images above) - they need cooler weather but protection overnight from frost. I watched a video mini workshop from Floret on how to grow these successfully and I can't wait to try them!

The Bascobel rose is a bright coral pink and a little more challenging than the "easy to grow" roses I've started with (two years ago was Lady of Shalot and last year was Claire Austin). I'm really exciting though - every time I've seen other gardeners grow this rose in photos I'm immediately drawn to it like a moth to a flame.

There's so much to look forward to now this spring. We're barely halfway through winter now but I'm SO READY for it to be over. Bring on the seeds, bulbs, green and warm weather.
